Special note
from the GHS Band Parents President
Dear Band Parents:
Wow it is hard to believe summer is over and school is
starting next week. The band looks good and has been working very
hard on all the music. It is time now for Band Parents to kick it
in to overdrive. In order to do that I need help. We have
been blessed with helpers for the last 2 weeks of camp, but with
marching season starting we will need more help.
Please consider helping us. We need people to do
lots of different things from passing out gold and gauntlets to moving
the pit equipment in the field for performances. You do not need
to do the work every time, just when you can. I know I will miss
one performance already. I love working with these kids and it is
great to watch my kids interact with them. What a better way to
see who your children are when you are not around. They get so
involved in band they forget you are there.
Soon we will start fundraising. The first one
will be the raffle. This should be a good money maker for
us. It costs $35,000.00 just for the activities of the
band. That does not include putting money back for the
trip. We have barely or not quite made budget the last two years,
so we have no money to give the kids for the trip. I would like
to change that this year. At each parent meeting we will give a
status report on where we are budget wise. Come be educated about
why we do what we do. I know I get tired of fundraising
too! If we all work hard on these then next year we won't have to
do as many.
Please consider how you can help. We are all
busy parents trying to keep up with our teenagers. It is not an
easy task, but rewarding. Join us and learn all about band.
Thanks,
Amy Smith

Dear Parents,
As you are well aware the first football game and the first performance
of the 2010 season is quickly approaching. The students are working
very hard and are eager for their first performance. I am really
impressed with how well the show is coming together and how good it
looks and sounds for this early in the season. It takes many parents to
make our portion of the evening run smoothing. We need parents to help
with equipment, uniforms, and water. If you think you would be
available to help in one of these areas please contact the following
people:
Equipment: Danny Robertson- dcbdbobson@gmail.com
Uniforms: Ann Shumaker- shubyx5@comcast.net
Water: Melody Bates-
I hope you are able to help us on Friday and see your student(s) start
the 2010 season on a high note!
Thanks!

JULY UPDATE
Hello all,
I hope you are having a nice summer. It is hard to believe it is the
middle of July already!
Here is an update on some important items leading us into band camp.
First and foremost, your student should be practicing their music and
starting to get a grasp of it. Remember:
1- student leaders are expected to come to camp with all music
memorized.
2- Juniors & Seniors should have pre-game & parade memorized
and all other music learned if not memorized. They should be able to
memorize the opener and crazy train.
3- Sophomores should have pre-game and parade memorized.
4- Freshman- be here and we are ready to help you.
Also-
a reminder that our next rehearsal is Thursday, July 29th from 6-8PM.
Now that we are getting closer to camp, I will be in and out of the
band room more frequently, as well as checking my mailbox at school. If
you wish to pay for the band camp fees now before the August rush of
registration and new school supplies and clothes please feel free to do
so. You can mail the form and fee to:
Galesburg High School Band
Attn: Ben Bredemeier
1135 W. Fremont St
Galesburg, IL 61401
Finally- here is a reminder of the band camp schedule:
Mon. Aug. 2- Freshman, Percussion, Guard, and student leaders- 5-8pm
Tues. Aug. 3- Freshman, Sophomores, Percussion, Guard, and student
leaders- 5-8pm

Additional
notices below:
Dear Parents,
Now that the District 205 School Board
has voted on a calendar for the 2010-2011 School Year, we have set our
schedule for the 2010 Marching Season. Feel free to print these out. I
will have hard copies available for your band student on the piano in
the band room. I would like to point out a couple things because this
calendar is different than what we have done in the past.
2010
Fall Calendar
2010
Marching Streaks Calendar
1)
Usually we have our big parent meeting right before
camp starts. This year we are going to hold that meeting at the end of
the school year on May 25th. The purpose of doing this is
hand out summer mailings as opposed to mailing them- to help save money
on postage. The other reason is make sure everyone is clear about what
we are expecting to make the 2010 season a success.
2)
To help make 2010 a success we are adding some
music rehearsals in June and July (June 8th, June 15, and
July 29th). These rehearsals are not optional. Students are
expected to be in attendance. Students will be excused for any given
reason, just as long as we have prior notification. If your student is
not in attendance and we are not notified, it could jeopardize the
chance of your student having a spot on the field next year.
3)
For band camp we decided that cramming everything
into one week and running three practices a day was in effective.
Therefore, as you will see camp is spread out through the course of two
weeks. It starts with just a couple hours a day before it picks up to
the traditional 6 hours per day schedule.
4)
Performances are also included. We will be doing
some new competitions/festivals (Monmouth and Rock Island) and we have
added the Meet the Streaks Performance on Aug. 20th.
5)
There are still some things that are undetermined
such as Lock-In, Pictures, and Leadership Clinic- this will be decided
at a later date.
If you have any questions- please do not
hesitate to contact me.
Thanks you for your patience in getting
this calendar put together!
Here comes Spring!

Band Camp is going
very well from what I saw today. Tommorrow the students are to be
at camp from 9:30 till 12:00 and 1:00 till 5:00. Due to the
extreme heat please make sure your students take water and get hydrated
each evening.
Thursday's schedule
is camp from 9:00 till 12:00 and then band olympics from 6:00 till 8:00
pm. The picnic will start serving food at 5:00 so everyone can
eat before they hit the field for the olympics. Please plan on
coming and watching your students and their sections preform.
Tables will be set up
for taking any other forms that need to be turned in. We will
also have volunteer forms there for you to sign up on. The hard
part for the students is continuing but now we parents must also get
very involved to make it all work. The Spirit Wear will also be
there so you can purchase your favorite Marching Streak item.
On Friday the
students will need to be at the school by 8:00 for the teacher
inservice.
I look forward to
seeing you all at the picnic!
Thanks

Band Slideshow CD's are now available for ordering. They are $10.00
each payable to GHS Band Parents. You can send the money to school
with your child this week or drop it off at my house at 400
Hawkinson Avenue. If you would like a copy, please E-mail me asap at tdaaa@comcast.net so that I can burn a copy for you. All

Question…do
you have email files of previous years parents? I’m hoping
that files from the last 3-5 years have been saved by someone. Do
you have the communication sheets completed by the parents at the
beginning of the year? Somehow we have excluded the Patron Sales
Chair from all the necessary information (like names/addresses of
students and parents) to maintain a mailing file. Any help or
direction would be appreciated.
