Greetings and Welcome
from the GHS Band Parents organization 2009-2010

Greetings all,
 
Marching season is over and we have entered the concert season of band, also known as “fundraising season.”  The band’s annual operating budget is $30,000.  This figure does not include saving money for the Disney Trip.

We face a number of fixed yearly expenses including; uniform replacement, repair, and cleaning, insurance, gas and bus fees for trips, end of year awards and senior scholarships, band camps for the drum majors and interested section leaders, salary for the percussion specialist, supplies for flags, the list goes on and on.  As you can see the majority of these expenses are incurred during marching season and we pay for them with fundraisers throughout the rest of the year. 

One of my goals has been to reduce the number of fundraisers we do each year.  To that end we are currently holding a $5000 raffle.  If we do well on this fundraiser we could eliminate several fundraisers both this year and in the future.   We have the potential to make up to $25,000 on the raffle if all the tickets printed are sold.  That breaks down to 20 tickets per band student.  Wouldn’t it be nice to be done with fundraising after the Christmas gift wrap?  There is still plenty of time to sell.  There are two more early bird drawings before the grand prize drawing on December 15th.  Please get out and sell those tickets!

Gift wrap is set to start the day after Thanksgiving.  Please be sure and sign up in the band room for 2 shifts per student.  We also need parents to supervise shifts.   Gift wrapping runs through December 24th.

We will be bagging groceries for tips at Hy-Vee on Wednesday, November 25th from 4 – 8 and again on December 12th. 

We appreciate all your hard work to support this fine band program.  The band can not do it without you!

Announcements from Ms. Shadensack

Symphonic and Concert Band Reminder‏:
Please help me to remind your students that for the March 21st band concert, all members of Symphonic and Concert Band need a flashlight.  We are going to perform a piece called Voodoo.  Voodoo is like the haunted house of band music and the flashlights are used as part of the performance.  It does not have to be anything special or a particular size, the only thing I ask is NO STROBE LIGHTS.  Please be sure that your students put their names on their flashlights.  If you have extra and are willing to share, please send extras with your students and label them with your name and I will be sure that they get back to your student.  We will be starting to rehearse the song with the flashlights on Monday February 22.

Jazz Band Announcements:

The jazz bands will be performing at Seminary Manor at 4pm on Tuesday, February 23.  The students will need to be there at 3:30.  Since there will not be a bus to this performance, we are going to need some help.

Jazz Showcase Advertizing

Dear Band Parents:
 
I am in need of some people to help me sell advertising for the Jazz Showcase program.  Last year we did this and it was a good success.  This needs to be done quickly as the showcase is March 25, 2010.  Please give me a call if you can solicite or if you would be willing to purchase an ad for the program.
Costs are:
    1/4 page or business card size:    $25.00
    1/2 page                                        $40.00
    Full page                                      $70.00

Grocery Bagging

Upcoming Grocery Bagging Dates:

March 13       10-4:00    Hy-Vee Henderson
April 3        10-4:00    Hy-Vee Henderson (note that this is the Saturday before Easter--likely to be a big intake)
May 1          10-4:00    Hy-Vee Main (first Sat. of the month, I'm told, is another big intake)

We need parent volunteers to supervise the students as the bag groceries.
Shifts are 2 hours long.
10 - 12
12 - 2
2 - 4
We need 2 adults per shift.
There is a sign up sheet for students on the band room door.

This has been a good money maker for us in the past and a lot of fun.
Jazz Band parents remember that March 13 is the ROWVA Jazz Festival.

There is a Band Parents Meeting next Tuesday, March 9, 7:00 p.m. in the band room.
We are beginning to plan for next year.

As Chair of the Patron Sales, I request that you please see the attached letter/file: 2009-2010 Patron Sales Letter.pdf

Question…do you have email files of previous years parents?  I’m hoping that files from the last 3-5 years have been saved by someone.  Do you have the communication sheets completed by the parents at the beginning of the year?  Somehow we have excluded the Patron Sales Chair from all the necessary information (like names/addresses of students and parents) to maintain a mailing file.  Any help or direction would be appreciated.

If you turned in an e-mail address, and are not receiving band e-mails, then you are probably one of the ones we got back as undeliverable.

WANTED: Your photos and videos of the GHS Marching Streaks and Band in action during 2009-2010!

Hello Band Parents and Students,

Do you have band photos and/or videos (digital) which you have taken or will be taking this year?  We would like to request copies for posting on the GHS Band Parents Website as well as keeping a historical record of our 2009-2010 band season.

 We post your photos and videos on our website (www.ghsbandboosters.info) and to help share the memories and experiences of all performances, competitions,  fund-raising activities, volunteering, fun, etc.  After posting on the website, your  photos and video copies are stored in safe keeping by our Historian as well as being used to help produce our wonderful band DVD at the end of the year which  is premiered at the Band Banquet.
