Band Camp 2011

Band camp will be held at GHS
starting Monday, August 1, 2011 and
runs through Friday, August 12, 2011.

General Information

Thursday, August 11th - BAND PICNIC & OLYMPICS - 5:00 pm at GHS

Monday, August 15th at GHS - TEACHER’S INSTITUTE PERFORMANCE, 7:45-9:15 am

ATTENDANCE AT ALL BAND CAMP SESSIONS IS MANDATORY

Whenever someone misses camp we lose time trying to catch that person up when they return to camp/school. Although I cannot make band camp part of the student's grade, missing all or a portion of band camp may mean becoming an alternate (sharing a spot with someone on the field). If your child needs to miss a portion of camp please send a completed or absence form with them. We need two weeks notice. Any attendance questions should be directed to Ms. Shadensack at email bshadensack@galesburg205.org

WHAT TO BRING TO CAMP

  •  Instrument in good playing condition (all keys, valves, slides, etc. working)
  • Accessories for your instrument (reeds, valve oil, sticks, mallets, etc.)
  • Three ring binders for music charts and storage (plastic page protectors are strongly encouraged. Drill Charts and Music will be turned in for a grade at the end of the marching season. Those who do not turn in all charts and all music are not eligible to earn an A for the term.
  • Pencil for marching and music rehearsals
  • Comfortable clothing
  • Gym shoes. NO SANDALS!!!
  • Drinking water!! BRING A WATER BOTTLE!!
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and hat.
  • Jacket (if cooler weather).

SCHOOL-OWNED INSTRUMENTS

School-owned instruments will be checked out on Monday, August 2nd for Freshman and Wednesday, August 4th, for upper class students. If you want to check out an instrument sooner, you may contact Mr. Bredemeier at 373-4146 or 371-9763. Each student must fill out a rental contract for each instrument that he/she uses. All students who are currently renting over the summer will need to fill out a new contract. There is a $25 per semester ($50 per year) rental fee for all school-owned instruments. This rental fee is also charged to all percussionists. This fee will be included with your book fees at registration.

Brass players need to make sure that they do not carry the instrument by the mouthpiece or the lead pipe. If your mouthpiece becomes stuck, please notify a director immediately so it can be removed.

Woodwind players need to make sure they are careful when assembling and dissembling the instrument that the rod and keys do not get bent.

Percussionists need to return all instruments to their proper location after rehearsal.

Students who rent an instrument from the “rent free program” will need to contact Dean Petrie at 343-2649 or email dpetrie@galesburg205.org

SCHOOL REGISTRATION

The possibility of school registration for band students during camp is very likely. We are unsure when this will happen. Further information will be given at that time.

MARCHING BAND COSTS

Uniform - $25.00
Shoes - $30.00
Gloves - $5.00
T-shirt - $10.00

The orders and payment are due no later than Friday, August 12. Payment plans are available if you need financial assistance. These fees are done through the Band Parent organization and not District 205 and therefore cannot be waived. If you would like to set-up a payment plan, please contact a band director.

The items and their approximate costs are as follows:

UNIFORMS

They are white and they are expensive. Students will be measured and fitted for their band uniforms during Band Camp. Uniforms will be distributed to the students during the same time. A $25.00 uniform rental and maintenance fee will be collected when you receive your uniform. Checks can be made out to GHS Band Boosters.

STUDENTS WILL PAY FOR ANY DAMAGES OR ANY PART OF THE UNIFORM THAT IS LOST OR STOLEN. UNIFORMS ARE $350 EACH. PLEASE KEEP THEM CLEAN AND TAKE CARE OF THEM.

For instructions regarding "Students - Wearing Your Uniform" AND "Care of your Marching Uniform", please refer to the UNIFORMS page.

Students will be expected to wash their uniforms when they get dirty. It is imperative that we not only sound great, but look great too, and keep our uniforms in good condition. Failure to take care of the uniform can result in damage to the uniform and a loss of uniform privileges. Students can only take their uniforms once they have paid their uniform fee.

MARCHING BAND SHOES

Marching band shoes will be ordered during camp. The cost of shoes is approximately $30.00. Shoes will be available to try on to ensure that the correct size is ordered. Money for shoes will be collected after the shoes arrive at which time checks can be made out to GHS Bands.

WHITE GLOVES

Everyone, except color guard and percussionists are required to purchase white gloves. They will be available for approximately $5.00 during camp. Checks can be made out to GHS Bands.

MARCHING BAND T-SHIRT

The official 2011-2012 Marching Streaks T-Shirt will be ordered during band camp. Students must wear the band t-shirt at competitions whenever they are not in uniform.  The band t-shirt is also the required uniform for pep band later in the school year. Everyone will need to order a t-shirt. The cost of the T-shirt will be approximately $10.00. Checks may be made out to GHS Band Parents.

PHOTO SESSION

The marching band photo session has been scheduled for August 9th at 8:00 a.m.  Call for freshmen and seniors is 7:15.  Sophomores and Juniors call is 7:30.

MARCHING SEASON REHEARSAL SCHEDULE

During the marching season, we will have mandatory rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday from 3-5:pm. They are required for a grade. Please let Ms. Shadensack know about any conflicts you have with these times as soon as possible. We will work out conflicts with other school activities and athletics. For athletics, Ms. Shadensack will sit down with your coaches and figure out the best schedule for you, as done in the past. Work is not an excuse for missing rehearsal!

Additionally, color guard, percussion, and drum major members will rehearse each Tuesday from 5-6:30pm during the marching season.
