GHS Band Parents Minutes February 12, 2008

1.  Call to Order/Introduction:

The meeting was called to order by President John Shelly. He welcomed everyone to the meeting.

2.  Secretary’s Report:

John asked everyone to read through the minutes.  They were approved as written.

3.  Treasurer’s Report:

As of February 10, 2008, we had income of $47,981.46 and expenses of $22,726.85 with $66,217.59 in our checking account and $42,696.50 in our money market account for a total balance of $108,914.09.  A motion was made and passed to approve the incomes and expenses as presented.

4.  Director’s Report:

Mr. Bredemeier reported that the last pep band and winter drumline performance is Friday, Feb. 15th.  On Saturday, Feb. 16th both gold and silver jazz bands travel to Western Illinois University for jazz performance, clinics and a concert at 3 p.m. They leave from GHS at 6:30 a.m. and students should bring money for lunch.  They will return by 6 p.m.

The Dan Leahy Sextet will be here February 28th and 29th and they are being sponsored by a grant from McDonald’s, Dick Blick and The Illinois Arts Council.  They will hold clinics and jazz sessions and will play in a combo setting on Friday, Feb. 29th at 7 p.m. in the Pavilion.  Jazz band students should sell two tickets to the event, at $5 each, and tickets will also be available at the door.  Dave Hoffman, last year’s featured trumpet player at our jazz night, plays in the Dan Leahy sextet.  It promises to be an excellent event for jazz music lovers.

The All District Concert will be on Sunday, Feb. 24th at 2 p.m. at GHS.  For the final number, Band-o-Rama, Mr. Bredemeier has invited Mr. Denisar to conduct the various bands.

On Thursday, March 6 from 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. we will have our own solo and ensemble contest.  All band students are required to participate as this event is in lieu of the spring concert usually held in March.  The students will perform both in the choir room and the auditorium, and gather in the band room.  Mr. B needs about 10 parents to assist.  Please see him if you can help.

Finally, Mr. B thanked Mrs. Tate for her work in diligently collecting the uniforms section by section.  Look over the information that your student received about turning in the uniforms prior to the Disney trip to make sure your student is on target for completing this task.

Before beginning committee reports, John Shelly thanked John Tate for heading up the trip committee.  He also announced that there will be a mandatory parent/chaperone/student meeting next month on Tuesday, March 11 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium to go over all the details of the trip.  A representative from Bob Rogers Travel agency will also be present.  The 20 chaperones will meet at 6 p.m. prior to the group meeting.  Again, this is a mandatory meeting for all people going on the trip.  Forms must be signed and important information will be distributed.

      7. Cheesecake – Laurie Pearson: No report.

6.  Old Business

John Shelly mentioned that we would be setting up for water, soda and popcorn for the Feb. 29th Dan Leahy sextet at the Pavilion.  He can do the set up but needs someone to run the sales that night. Tanna volunteered to help.

Mr. Juraco thanked everyone who had participated in the debit card/teen checking account  program.  He said that you should try your debit card before you go on the trip and call the 800 number on the back before you go to Florida (or overseas) and try to use it, due to the precautions banks take when they see unusual activity on a debit card.

Mr. B. will contact the Bob Rogers Travel agency with parent questions about traveling along with the band and making restaurant reservations at Disney.  Also, he provided their phone number, but asked that you wait before calling until he calls them first.  When he gets the answer to the reservation question, he will send it out in an email.
